Chapter 16

After Tris finishes her conversation with her mother she returns to the dormitory only to find Al sitting alone. After she talks with him about it, I gathered that he is ashamed of the little progress he is making. I do think that he is in Dauntless for the right reason, wanting to protect people that is, but I don't think that alone is going to get him to the point that he needs to be. Tris tries to be there for him, but he gets creepy and makes a move on her. I wish she liked him. He's a nice kid. Oh well.

Since talking about family has been unofficially deemed off limits, during dinner, aptitude tests become the conversation topic. Tris begins to think of her own faction and her family, and eventually she thinks back to her own test. It sucks for her that she has friends from Candor because they can tell when she is lying. I was wondering how she was going to get around letting out her secret, but she continues to be witty, and found a way to change the subject.

The initiates are getting nervous because rankings are going to be posted soon. Four explains how the ranks work and his eyes fall on Tris. She says she thinks it's because she probably looks nervous, but I'm pretty sure we all know that he likes her by now. Maybe she should get a clue? Hopefully she will figure it out soon, because I've been shipping* them so hard.

Surprise! Tris is rated number 6! Of course this surprises her, since she lost her first fight, but evidently beating Molly gave her a boost. I found it funny because Molly was mad. She deserved it. But on a different note, that night, Edward gets stabbed because he is rated first. The culprits? Drew and Peter.. Duh. Tris helps him. The scene is really gross and described in more detail than I would have liked. He and Myra end up leaving the Dauntless to become factionless. Sucks to suck. Sorry, that was a bit harsh. Oh well. But thankfully their leaving keeps Al from being cut. So I guess that's a plus if you look at it that way.

* A term used to describe fan fictions that take previously created characters and put them as a pair. It usually refers to romantic relationships, but it can refer platonic ones as well. (Just think of "shipping" as short for "relationSHIP".) [definition from Urban Dictionary]

"I believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another."
