Visiting Day at last. The day that has the potential to change Tris's feelings of leaving her family. The room is filled with hopelessness though. Everyone seems to have realized that it is entirely possible for them to reach the Pit floor only to find that their family isn't coming. It made me think of when I was in the psych ward, how my parents visited me every chance they got, but when I thought about the others, my heart dropped. I am fortunate enough to not know personally what it's like to have a family that isn't always there for you. I am so blessed with the family I have, and through reading this book, it only becomes more apparent to me.
Even so she hasn't much hope, Tris makes her way to the Pit floor anyway. She wears clothes that reveal her tattoo, even though she is fully aware that her family would not approve. I feel that she is doing this as an act of rebellion against her family, and as a defense mechanism. I believe she thinks if she gives off the image that she doesn't care what they think, she won't give them the opportunity to hurt her. When scanning the room and taking note of the other initiates with their families, Tris catches a glimpse of her mother. I was surprised that someone from her family showed up, but I knew that if someone did, it would be her mom. I am glad that her father didn't come because I still don't have a particular liking of him. The thing that surprised me was that Tris's father didn't go to visit Caleb. I understand that he probably felt that Caleb had betrayed him to, but leaving Caleb alone on Visiting Day is a little harsh.
The way that Tris's mother speaks to her is very suspicious, not only to me, but to Tris as well. She can tell something is up. From the way she seems to know an awful lot more than she should, to her seeming to recognize Four, it becomes obvious that something is about to be revealed, and that it does! PLOT TWIST. Tris's mother is from Dauntless. I am pretty proud of Tris for putting the pieces together so the puzzle is becoming a bit clearer.
Tris feels that she can be honest about her aptitude test results with her mother, and then suddenly her mother seems to know much more about Tris's situation than what she could possibly have learned without some kind of prior experience. It makes me wonder if there wasn't a member of her family that was Divergent. Even though the whole conversation is kind of shady, one thing struck me as especially odd. Tris's mother instructed her to talk to Caleb about the simulation serum. I'm not quite sure why, but I'm certain I will find out if I read on.
"So Tori was right. Divergent is a dangerous thing to be. I just don't know why, or even what it really means, still."
